Call for memorabilia to help celebrate school’s centenary

October 3, 2016 by

In preparation for the celebration of 100 years of schooling at Brighton-Le-Sands Public School, locals in nearby Rockdale and surrounding areas are being called on to help collate memorabilia relating to the school’s history.

Alan Powditch, a student at the primary school between 1947 and 1956, has been researching the suburb of Brighton-Le-Sands’ history, which he says relates directly to the school.

The former pupil first put together a history of the school at the age of 11 as part of a history project. He said it was due to development in the local area that the school came to be established in 1917, heralding a new era in education.

Records of those early days remained intact until the school was burnt down in 2000; a fact that hindered Powditch’s efforts to procure relevant details on its history.

He said renovations that saw the closure of the Rockdale Library for some time also made his research difficult.

Old photographs, calendars, brochures and other materials from the past 100 years, including the period between 1917 and 1950, are now being sought to help celebrate the school centenary, which is to be held on April 1, 2017.

He said donations of memorabilia can also include everything from pupil reports to old uniforms.

The centenary celebration will include entertainment, tours, a decade walk through the history of the school and a time capsule.
