New show tackles Australia’s idea of female beauty
June 9, 2012 by Robyn
‘Australian Booty’ is the new show by comedienne and rap artist Candy Bowers and aims to address the way in which female beauty is portrayed in Australia. Candy has developed the show which features music, dance and comedy because she believes the rarity of plus-sized and black women in the media in Australia is unacceptable.
Even though this show does feature a great deal of comedy, it also tackles some important issues such as the lack of large, black women in magazines and on the television.
Candy believes it was her time at Edinburgh Fringe Festival that really highlighted the issues for her. From her time on stage in Australia, Candy had become accustomed to her appearance making people laugh but the reaction of the Edinburgh audience was very different. Instead of laughter, Candy was greeted with wolf whistles.
Candy says:
“What I began to understand is that Australian culture views women and beauty in a very narrow way.”
Large, black women are rarely portrayed as beautiful in the media and are rarely in the public eye which is affecting how Australians define beauty.
She added:
“I made the show because I’m invisible and my community is not represented.”
Printing companies help shows like this to gain exposure through poster and
flyer printing and this is a show people won’t want to miss. ‘Australian Booty’ will be on at Brisbane Powerhouse from 30th May to 10th June 2012 and people from all over
