The Kathleen Keegel Children’s Fund is holding a dinner dance to raise funds for its charity work. Melbourne-based cover band In2Groove will provide live entertainment at the event, and there will also be a DJ to help the party go with a swing.

The Kathleen Keegel Children’s Fund works with people in Sri Lanka to care for under-privileged children and orphans. It is run by the family of Kathleen Keegel, who was born in Sri Lanka but moved to Australia to raise a family. Now some of her family have returned to live in Sri Lanka where they manage a children’s home and run other groups for young children.

In keeping with the charity’s work, the dinner will include traditional Sri Lankan dishes as well as Western food for those with less adventurous tastes. Guests should bring their own drinks. A raffle will also be held on the night.

Those looking for more information should look out for posters around Dandenong. Poster printing is a fantastic low-cost way to advertise charity events, meaning more of the money raised can be given directly to the cause. Flyer printing is also a good choice for advertising in a local area.

The dinner dance will be held on Saturday June 29th at Menzies Hall in North Dandenong, starting at 7:00pm. Tickets can be purchased from Georgie on 0403 023 949 and will also be available on the door.

Fremantle MP Simone McGurk has urged parliament to draw attention to the condition of the famous terraces in Henderson Street in the hope that their future can be decided.

The terraces make up one of the oldest continual lines of cottages in Australia and are a significant feature of Fremantle’s architectural history.

Speaking about the buildings’ importance, McGurk said:

“They are integral to the Fremantle Prison, the state’s only world heritage listed building.”

It is expected that Western Australia premier Colin Barnett will visit the site during the coming weeks.

Bill Marmion, the WA housing minister, considers the buildings an uneconomical proposition for social housing, citing an estimated $6 million to repair the cottages plus ongoing maintenance costs.

Fremantle City has rejected an offer to purchase the cottages. Instead, a lease agreement is being drafted and the council is preparing a business proposition for future usage of the buildings.

Adding further intrigue to the fate of the buildings is Bruce Moriarty, a prominent Fremantle developer, who was seen inspecting the area with Guy Weguelin, the heritage repairman who oversaw the initial cottage restoration four decades ago. Mr Moriarty is keeping tight lipped about the visit, claiming he was just taking a nostalgic tour of the buildings along with other historic properties around the city.

Nevertheless, Mr Moriarty is interested to listen to ideas about the future of the iconic terrace strip. Fremantle locals are now in the position to make their own opinions clear on the developments, especially those equipped to make their case with the help of banner printing and flyers acquired from Fremantle printing services.

Geotechnical work has begun in Mooloolaba to bring the suburb’s much-loved Beach Lifeguard Tower back to life.

Wild weather during the summer saw Sunshine Coast beaches battered, with heavy sand losses and damage caused to life saving infrastructure. By January, the Lifeguard Tower foundations had worn to the point where removal of the structure was unavoidable.

Fortunately, a number of Mooloolaba businesses have come to the rescue. Sunshine Coast company GeoDrill is assisting by offering its services to the tower reconstruction project. The company services clients across Australia, but is more than happy to be back on home turf. GeoDrill owner Steve Partleton moved to the Sunshine Coast in 1996 and is delighted to offer his service to the community. Speaking about working in the area, he said:

“Both my kids attended nippers here in Mooloolaba. We are happy that we can finally provide a service back to the Mooloolaba community and work with local businesses.”

The GeoDrill rigs are ideal for work on the beach, and will be taking samples of rock and soil to ascertain exacting specifications for storm proof tower foundations. Many Sunshine Coast beaches have only recently reopened after months of huge swells, storm surges and high tides. Dunes had become extremely eroded and protective fencing was stripped from its foundations.

Lifeguards are continuing beach patrols until the easing of swell and wind conditions. Locals and visitors to the region can be reminded of hazardous conditions with the help of poster printing, flyer printing, and other communication platforms designed by quality printing companies in Mooloolaba.

Australian scientists have discovered a way to print solar panels utilising commonplace printing technology.

The extremely thin solar cells printed on flexible plastic are expected to create up to 50 watts of electricity for every square metre of panel. The CSIRO has installed a solar cell printer which can print out panels the size of A3 paper – ten times larger than was previously possible.

The improvements lead to a very real possibility of off-grid power and solar water purification systems, among other adaptations.

Dr Scott Watkins, CSIRO materials scientist, said:

“What we’re developing are some organic semiconductors the chemicals we’re using are very similar to those in nature but they do conduct small amounts of electricity.”

A key consideration is the ability to install the panels in places that would not normally be considered. For example, curtains are usually used to keep sunlight and heat out of a building, but a curtain constructed from flexible solar panels can have the added effect of simultaneously producing power for the building.

The panels are suitable for structures that don’t have a load bearing roof, with great potential for poorer communities around the world. Portable devices such as laptops could be another winner. A solar panel attached to the computer could charge the battery in regions far away from any power socket.

Researchers from the Victorian Organic Solar Cell Consortium are adapting the technology to suit traditional printing services, giving everybody an opportunity to utilise the technology.

Existing print companies and solar panel manufacturers are optimistic that utilisation of established techniques will enable manufacturing of solar panels by small businesses

Researchers from St Vincent’s Hospital in Melbourne, along with those from the University of Wollongong, are confident that custom-made 3D printed body parts such as nerve cells and muscle could be a reality within three years.

They anticipate the technology will allow the printing of entire human organs in a little over a decade.

Professor Gordon Wallace, ACES Director, said:

“It is already possible to print 3D biocompatible plastics and metals to manufacture patient-specific implants. Within a few years, we believe it will be possible to manufacture living tissues.”

Discussions are being held in Melbourne between Professor Wallac, medical manufacturers and prominent clinicians regarding additive fabrication – the ability to create 3D objects from digital information. It is hoped that the printing techniques will provide solutions to a variety of medical and surgical challenges, such as bionics, muscle and bone creation and epilepsy control.

Researchers are anticipating a huge boost with next month’s launch of St Vincent’s Melbourne hospital biofabrication unit. The facility will be the first in Australia to be situated on site in a hospital environment. The benefit of direct contact between clinicians and scientists should encourage fast tracking of useful 3D printed devices geared toward the creation of organs.

Printing technology continues to advance in leaps and bounds, creating a bridge between information and utility. Many print companies are excited to be part of the ongoing scientific and technological advances, especially when dovetailed toward improving the health and wellbeing of Melbourne hospital patients.

The new option will appeal to locals who currently have to travel to Brisbane for vital healthcare. The $85 million development will provide at least 80 bed spaces and offer a large range of surgical and medical services. The facility will comprise operating theatres, patient wards and a care centre for cancer patients.

Dr John O’Donnell expects the hospital to meet the demands of this fast growing region. He said:

“The hospital will be a truly innovative, unique and contemporary model including the latest use of digital technologies for providing health care needs.”

Dr O’Donnell also said the facility will be attuned to community health by providing holistic health care, promoting wellness and illness prevention alongside acute care facilities. Mayor Paul Pisasale is excited about the development, which will offer a high level of health services to residents of the area.

Patients requiring acute service assistance are also thrilled that they won’t have to travel so far for treatment.

One patient, Antoinette Keomoungkhoun, said:

“I had to rely on family members to take me to my treatments or appointments, which was such a huge impact and inconvenience on not only me, but those who were helping me…it’s going to make appointments so much easier.”

Construction on the new hospital is scheduled to begin this August, with completion expected in 2015.

Options are being considered for the future of the Belmont Airport site. Developer Mirvac, owner of the land, has been approached by various interested parties.

The site’s location, close to Central Coast surf beaches and pristine waterways, has attracted the attention of developers hoping to establish housing. This option has sparked a reaction from Friends of Belmont Airport, a group which is committed to standing by the council and community preference for retaining the site as an airport.

Council zoning specifies the land should be used as an airport, or with consent, could be used for education, health, or community infrastructure.

A Mirvac representative spoke about its decision to sell, saying:

“It’s a great asset, but it’s none-core to our strategy. We’ve had approaches from various people, so we decided to put it to market.”

The land was purchased by Mirvac in 2007 for $5 million, and while many Belmont locals would prefer it to remain as an airport, there have been several other options tabled, including an entertainment centre, hotel, church and restaurant.

An earlier negotiation between Mirvac and the Central Coast Aero Club to develop light industry on the land could not be agreed upon. Another application for the land to be used for housing was also rejected by council.

Zoning discussions continue, and are sure to become intensified due to the picturesque location and sensitive environmental concerns. Belmont printing services are eager to see the situation resolved in anticipation of extra business provided by ongoing advertising and promotion of the site.
