The Cancer Council has organised Relay for Life every year since 1999. The event allows participants to not only raise funds to assist in Cancer research, but also to remember loved ones who have succumbed to the disease, or to recognise those currently struggling with it. It appeals to anyone who has been touched by the disease, whether through personal experience or just through having an interest in making a difference.

With a team captain leading, 10 to 15 people of all ages come together as a team to work throughout the year to fundraise for cancer research. The scope of the fundraising activities is decided upon by the team and there is no limit to what activities can take place.

Finally, all of the teams congregate at the Relay for Life to enjoy themselves with a number of events and ceremonies as well as participate in the relay, either walking or running, and teams are encouraged to add to the fun by dressing in costume for this event. Team members may also choose to camp overnight.
