Red Stitch launches new season
December 22, 2011 by James
Popular theatre ensemble Red Stitch have launched their Season One for 2012 which will take them away from their home in St Kilda, near Caulfield, to the Arts Centre stage with a re-mounted production of ‘The Laramie Project- Ten Years Later.’
The season also has four premiers, including two Broadway plays, and for the first time ever, will present a piece of dance theatre. The dance theatre piece is called Stockholm and is by English Playwright Bryony Lavery.
The other Victorian premier is Beyond the Neck written by Tom Holloway about the Port Arthur massacre. Artistic Director David Whitely says:
“We love Tom Holloways work and feel that this one needs to be done in
Victoria. The play is about coming to terms with grief and loss. It’s a very emotional and constructive play.”
The Red Stitch ensemble is made up of members Kat Stewart, Dion Mills, Sarah Sutherland and Brett Cousins all who have been working with each other for a number of years. When considering plays for a new season, Whitely says:
“The company searches for the best new work it can, then considers the mix of light and shade.”
Long-term plans for the company include a yet to be confirmed tour of last year’s hit Stop. Rewind and national tours of Red Stitch’s work in other Australian cities:
“The only way is to go forward,” says Whiteley. “You can’t stand still. But it’s about sustainable growth; we can’t overreach ourselves.”
Printed brochures with information about the season will be distributed throughout Melbourne at favourite cafes and venues.
