The final event of the Leo of the Year competition was held in Narre Warren on 18th March, where Leo club president of Benalla, Jazzy Burke, obtained the runner-up position.

Leo clubs are a youth-focused extension of charity organisation Lions Club International. After being named champion at the district final held in Yarrawonga a week earlier, Burke, who is also the young citizen of the year, travelled to Narre Warren to compete against other fellow Leo members from Southern NSW and Victoria.

A Leo member from the Hobsons Bay Leo Club, Kieran Azzapardi, was named as the champion Leo of the year.

The finalists of the competition were required to present a five-minute speech and were also subjected to an interview by a judging panel. The participants were given the freedom to select a topic for their speeches. The title of Burke’s speech was “Using failure to achieve success”; her speech won her the top position in that section of the competition.

According to Burke, her experience in the Leo of the Year competition has been positive and worthwhile. She thus urged other Leo members to participate in similar future events.

Leo members often carry out banner printing and display to reach out to the public and promote their various activities including fundraising. Via various activities and workshops, members of various districts gain the chance to polish their leadership, teamwork and communication skills.
