Annual awards to showcase top gardens in Vincent

October 7, 2018 by

Gardens displayed at businesses, or those brightening up areas surrounding homes in East Perth and throughout the City of Vincent, are set to be placed in the spotlight.

The City of Vincent has been receiving entries for the annual Greening Vincent Garden Competition, which was first held in 1995.

Boasting more than 60 public parks and facilities, many of which have been featured as part of local promotional brochure printing, the council has been proactively supporting `greening’ initiatives such as the garden competition for many years.

In a recent statement about the garden awards, a council spokesman said:

“In keeping with the City’s commitment to environmental sustainability and waterwise principles, for each category all entries will be judged against waterwise criteria such as use of native plants, mulch, water saving measures and demonstrated controlled use of fertilisers and pesticides.”

A new category, the Best Business Garden, has been added this year due to the increasing development being experienced.

Other award categories for 2018 will include Mayor’s Encouragement Award, Best Vegetable or Food Garden, Best Residential Rear Garden, Best Kept Verge, Best Courtyard or Balcony Garden, Catchment Friendly Garden and Best Residential Front Garden.

Cash prizes will be up for grabs in the competition, which will be judged by members of the council’s Parks & Urban Green Team this coming Monday to Friday, October 8 and 12.

Winners will be announced at an awards presentation by Mayor Emma Cole on November 14 at the North Perth Town Hall.
