Local sports award to pack a punch

Top sporting achievers from Slacks Creek and throughout the City of Logan will be recognised during this year’s major Sports Award.

The Audi Centre Springwood City of Logan Sports Awards has put the spotlight on many local athletes who began their sporting careers in the area.

The impressive list has previously included swimmer Jodie Henry, speed skater Steven Bradbury, heavyweight boxer Alex Leapai and rugby league star Cameron Smith. Some have become so successful, they have even feature on a number of promotional products.

The local 12-category competition has this year attracted 131 nominations.

City of Logan Acting Mayor Cherie Dalley said the Sports Awards were one of the biggest events on Council’s calendar each year, and while many top athletes have been involved, the event encompassed everyone. She said:

“It’s not just for the big names – the awards also recognise those who’ve had to overcome adversity or toil away for years making ends meet while chasing their dream.

“It is also about the people who work behind the scenes, the administrators, whose efforts make sporting contests possible in the first place.”

Special guest at the City of Logan Sports Awards this Saturday, October 13 at the Logan Metro Sports and Events Centre will be boxer Danny Green, who has been world champion in his field four times.

He said that when it came to breeding champions, the City is somewhat of a sporting heavyweight, with a big battle in store to select the ultimate 2018 winner.
