Winning entry to feature at Sydney Design Festival

August 26, 2018 by

Graphic design skills and an eye for architectural design in particular have been great assets for entrants in the 2019 Museum of Applied Arts and Sciences’ (MAAS) Architecture Commission.

Introduced as an aspect of the Sydney Design Festival for the first time last year, the commissioned piece which attracts entries from Brookvale and throughout New South Wales will be featured at next year’s event.

A MAAS spokesman described the festival as:

“An annual celebration of design.”

In 2019 the winning entry’s design will be displayed on the Powerhouse Museum’s forecourt which offers the successful designers high visibility due to the busy traffic corridor along Harris Street as well as ongoing museum visitation.

Entries, which closed on August 13, were called from designers and architects.

Their task was to come up with a design concept for a temporary structure or installation that not only works at the site but also explores the prospect for architecture to deal with complex issues such as access and environmental sustainability.

MAAS Director Peter Denham said:

“The MAAS Architecture Commission is an opportunity for emerging practitioners to create something truly unique that will be experienced by both the design community and the wider Sydney community.”

Last year the inaugural Commission recipient was Sydney-based architecture studio Trias with an installation called Four Periscopes.

This year’s winning design will be announced in September to allow time for the installation to be mounted during the Sydney Design Festival to be held from March 1 to 10, 2019.
