Awards honour Logan sporting greats

The Logan Sporting Hall of Fame has added two more sporting achievers.

World champion heavyweight boxer from Slacks Creek Alex Leapai and Brisbane Bronco’s retiring captain Corey Parker are the latest inductees into the Hall of Fame.

Deputy Mayor of Logan Cherie Dalley said honouring Alex Leapai and Corey Parker by including them in the Hall of Fame enabled the city to acknowledge two great local sporting representatives.

The Hall, she added, was established in 2015 for the very reason of showcasing the city’s sporting heroes.

Parker, in addition to being inducted into the Hall of Fame, was also named Sportsman and Sportsperson of the Year.

Marketing services are expected to swing into gear soon, with the news from Leapai, announced on the presentation night, that he plans to step back into the ring.

Leapai, who had retired earlier this year after being told the sight in one of his eyes could be at risk if he continued, said the issue had now been resolved and he would soon be resuming training.

The City of Logan Sports Awards also honoured a number of other local achievers in sports with presentations, including Sportswoman of the Year Hulita Haukinima and Sports Veteran of the Year Wilma Perkins.

A full list of winners in this year’s awards is available on the Council’s website.
