Chance to raise money in honour of local athlete

Keen runners from Rockdale have the chance to challenge themselves and raise money for charity in May.

Locals are being encouraged to sign up for the annual Rockdale Fun Run, which takes place around the area and finishes at the Peter Depena Reserve.

This year, the event is called the Albie Thomas Rockdale Fun Run in memory of local athlete Albie Thomas, OAM.

Mr Thomas, who represented Australia at three Olympic Games and broke several world records during his athletics career, passed away late in 2013. Mr Thomas was also a life member of the St George Athletics Club, having first joined in 1951 and coached a number of young athletes in the area. He was also heavily involved in the organisation of the fun run event each year.

This year, participants are being asked to raise money for the Knights of St George Heart Association, a charity supported by Mr Thomas that helps the Cardiothoracic Unit at St George Hospital.

The event takes place on Sunday May 25th and participants can choose to either run or walk the five kilometre course, or alternatively walk a one kilometre course.

Spectators might like to think about banner printing to spur on the runners, especially as they head towards the end of the course.

For more information and to register, visit the event’s website.

Entries close on Thursday May 22nd.
