City rewarded for water-saving strategies

The implementation of techniques to save water in Canning Vale and across the City of Canning has been rewarded with a Waterwise Council endorsement.

The seal of approval issued by the Water Corporation came after the City introduced a number of key water-saving strategies, which included irrigation systems that were water efficient, low-water-use principles for new parks, and the creation of low-irrigation streetscapes.

Mayor Paul Ng said the endorsement provides the city with free staff Waterwise-training programmes, a chance to take part in initiatives for water efficiency and access to community promotional materials such as flyers, brochures and newsletters.

He said that in working towards receiving the latest recognition, the City was putting into place a guide for members of the community to emulate, adding.

“With climate change now affecting the amount of rainfall we receive in Perth every year, it is more important than ever that we are water wise in everything we do.”

Ng said reducing water usage could be as simple as using pool covers, introducing water-wise gardens or taking shorter showers.

Subsidies, he said, were offered on pool covers, rainwater tanks and home water audits, and the city also held regular water wise workshops.

The Mayor added that anyone seeking tips on how to manage water better, particularly around the garden and house, is able to find more information at the Water Corporation website.
