City serves up taste of Asia after dark

Alexandria and other City of Sydney residents will be treated to traditional Korean cuisine during the full month of ‘Asia on Your Doorstep’ celebrations.

The event, which will see traditional Korean cuisine join the culinary delights on offer for the first time, will be held in Little Hay Street which is the centre of the Chinatown night markets.

The markets, which are often featured on holiday cards promoting the area, have been a major drawcard of visitors and locals for the past five years.

Lord Mayor Clover Moore said the nightlife in Dixon Street will also be ignited during the Asia on Your Doorstep programme with local artists, nearby stores, and young designers operating scores of stalls featuring Asian cultural treasures.

He said Chinatown hosts a unique cultural identity that has developed to become one of the City’s key economic precincts.

It is estimated almost 50% of overseas tourists visit the area’s shops, bars and restaurants when in Sydney.

The Asia on Your Doorstep celebrations will also provide guided tours to leading restaurants in the precinct, hosted by Taste Cultural Food Tours.

Patrons will be able to select from three different tour options including Throughasia Taste Tour, A Taste of Chinatown and Korean Cultural Progressive Dinner.

The Friday Night Markets and all the action in Little Hay Street will be open to the public from 5:00 pm to 10:00 pm throughout Good Food Month, which ends on October 28.
