Community has say on future use of former bowling club site

Residents from Canning Vale and throughout the City of Canning have put forward ideas for the future use of the site that formerly hosted the Cannington Bowling Club.

The club, which closed in 2016, was recently demolished, leaving the George St West site vacant and ready to be developed into what council hopes will be a place of more wide-ranging use for the entire community.

City of Canning Mayor Paul Ng said the future use of the site had been the subject of community consultation, ideas from which will be presented to the November 23 agenda briefing meeting of Council. Ng added:

“Ideas for the short term use of the area included a community garden, farmers’ market, night markets, pop up event area, parkland, outdoor cinema area in the warmer months, adventure playground or an area where play equipment for older children could be installed, similar to a ninja warrior course.”

Longer term uses incorporated a list of potential options, including the establishment of a community centre, developing a park land or community garden, a BBQ area, senior citizens or adult learning facility, playground or recreation area for adults and older children, or allowing the local Men’s Shed to use the area.

Printing services will no doubt be put to good use in coming months to record results of further engagement with the community of Canning before final recommendations are detailed into a report and submitted for consideration by a full meeting of Council.
