Captain Kirk treks to Perth and beyond

February 28, 2013 by

In March 2013, West Australian fans of the Star Trek movies and TV series will journey to the Perth Convention & Exhibition Centre from such remote corners of the universe as Wangara, Stirling and Welshpool to spend time with the original star of the series. William Shatner, who is 81 and showing no signs of retiring, will appear at the Oz Comic-Cons in Adelaide and Perth.

Shatner, who played Captain James T. Kirk in the original 1960s series and voiced the character in the 1970s animated version, is looking forward to visiting the opal mines of Coober Pedy, and diving with whale sharks off Ningaloo.

Shatner and his wife, Elizabeth Anderson Martin, will have a few days to spare on their trek, and have asked fans to send suggestions for further adventures via Twitter.

An interesting feature of the Star Trek franchise is the artwork used for poster printing. Being set in deep space, the show and its merchandise have always had a futuristic feel. Of course the style is based on what was considered futuristic in 1966. ‘Trekkies’, as Star Trek fans are called, are probably not too critical of the artwork; after all, it has been a long time since the show was considered to be any more than a bit of fun.

Shatner spoke of his love for Australia in an interview in Los Angeles promoting his new animated movie, Escape from Planet Earth. He recalled lying on his back in the Tasmanian bush, listening to the Wallabies jumping.

Footy and fun in Hawthorn next month

February 22, 2013 by

Hawthorn football fans should make a date in their diaries for early next month when the Hawthorn Football Club Family Day takes place.

The event is being held at the Hawthorn Hawks’ spiritual home at the Glenferrie Oval. It is a great chance to get up close and personal with some of the players during a fun day out.

Entertainment includes a live stage show by Alvin and the Chipmunks, who will also be on hand to meet and greet visitors. A live band will provide entertainment for the adults and the team’s sponsors will be offering activities for all the family. The event will also promote the work of Zaidee’s Rainbow Foundation, which encourages people to consider organ and tissue donation and is supported by the Hawks.

The Hawks players will be available for a limited time to sign autographs and have pictures taken with fans. Anyone who gets a great shot might like to think about using a professional printing company to create a high quality copy of the picture for framing or sending to friends. The 2013 guernsey presentation will take place on stage during the event and official team merchandise will be on sale for anyone who wants to take home the latest strip.

The family day takes place from 11am to 2pm on Sunday March 3rd and entry is free for members. Non-members are asked to make a gold coin donation. There will be food and drink available, but if families prefer they can bring a picnic.
