Family fun for Rockingham summer

October 26, 2017 by

The Summer Series, events planned from October until March in the City of Rockingham, promises to deliver family-friendly entertainment for free, in public places, with no alcohol or smoking allowed.

Down the coast in Safety Bay and Golden Bay, outdoor cinemas will show family-oriented movies. In Rockingham, activities will take place along the beach at Churchill Park. Highlights will be a community arts festival in November, the switching on of Christmas lights in December, and a New Year’s Eve party.

One of the most eagerly-awaited events is the exhibition of entries in the annual Castaways sculpture competition. The competition, which closed in June, was to create artworks from recyclable material, to stimulate awareness about protecting our planet’s resources. This year is the 10th Anniversary of this competition.

Two future events linked to this sculpture exhibition are the 2018 Castaways poetry and photography competitions, in which entrants are encouraged to write poems or take photographs of these exhibits for next year’s competitions. Anyone might be inspired to turn their creative endeavours into brochure or poster printing with the help of local print shops.

The eight prizes for the sculpture competition will be awarded at a special presentation on Saturday, October 28, between 10:00 am and 4:00 pm, heralding the start of the week-long exhibition of all entries along the foreshore in Churchill Park until Sunday, November 5.
