Festival to target aspiring filmmakers

In an effort to uncover some of Heathmont and Maroondah City’s next generation of producers and directors, the council is putting its support behind the staging of the Maroondah Cinematic Youth Film Festival.

The event being organised by the Maroondah FReeZA crew, Bassline Productions, invites entries from aspiring filmmakers who would like to see their work showcased in big screen format.

The FReeZA Programme is a State Government-run initiative that focuses on interactive professional and personal development through the staging of smoke, alcohol and drug-free cultural events.

A spokesman for the organisers said the festival is aimed at young people aged from 12 to 25, and added:

“The best and brightest filmmaking talent will be projected up on the big screen as we discover which filmmakers made the final cut to become winners of this year’s inaugural event.”

The films entered into the contest are to run from half a minute to 10 minutes and it is important that all work is original. Entry is available to both groups and individuals.

Whether aspiring to one day being promoted on business cards as being a film director, or simply seeking to experience filmmaking for the first time, the Maroondah Cinematic Youth Film Festival provides the platform.

On November 24, selected entries will be screened at the Aquanation outdoor space, with food and entertainment provided.

A panel will judge the films, with prizes to be presented on the night.
