Film fest joins forces with coffee shop to showcase local talent

Rockdale residents got the chance to see two films by producers from the area this week, as part of this year’s Arts Festival.

Together with Swallow Coffee Traders, organisers hosted an event called Shorties at Swallow, which saw a pop-up cinema launched at the café.

The first movie was Northkids by Jonnie Leahy, which tells the story of two friends coming of age, and the second was Guardian Elf by Monica Zanetti, who also stars in the production. It follows an isolated and depressed young woman as she meets a magical creature who is also on a journey of redemption.

Both films have won awards locally and internationally

The annual festival is now in its fourth year, and in 2015 runs until Sunday, April 12th. Various events are taking place around the city. Art fans should look out for poster printing advertising everything on offer, or check out the full listing on the Rockdale City Council website.

Other events this year include an outdoor art gallery, an exhibition of residents’ photographs taken for the Camerart competition, and a series of children’s activities during the Easter school holidays.

The films were shown on Thursday, March 26th, and viewers had to be over the age of 18. Tickets were made available through Sticky Tickets, or could be purchases direct from the café.
