Footscray could become an employment hub

As Melbourne evolves, planners are proposing that Footscray may be a suitable jobs hub.

The idea is that congestion can be alleviated in Melbourne if job creation is encouraged in certain districts. Footscray, Werribee and Sunshine have all been mentioned in this context. The Victorian Planning Authority (VPA) has specific projects in mind, and business card printing will no doubt get a boost if local economic development takes off.

There have been policies that have focused on other ways of making Melbourne into a sustainable system, together with investment in the transport infrastructure to ease the pressure on commuters. There has also been an attempt to increase the density of housing in the vicinity of transport nodes, although opposition to new construction has hindered progress in this respect.

When it comes to Footscray, there is an important decision to be made. The outcome of the choice should affect local economic prospects going forward, but the dilemma revolves around the location of a health facility. One option is to have the hospital in the vicinity of the local university. The other possibility is to construct the building further away from Victoria University.

The theory is that having a hospital adjacent to a university will generate positive economic outcomes. There is a great chance of cooperation between departments in close proximity to one another, and the hope is that Footscray can play a big part in maintaining the liveability of Melbourne.
