The Melbourne Cup Carnival and Toyota AFL Finals Series are two of 14 major events flagged by the City of Melbourne to receive funding under the Triennial Sponsorship Programme.

A total of $5m has been approved to assist with funding low-cost or free elements to the events over the next three years, according to Lord Mayor Robert Doyle, who said:

“Melbourne is Australia’s sporting, arts and cultural capital for a reason. All of these events contribute to our city’s reputation and boost our retail and hospitality industries.

“The latest round of funding ensures these iconic events will maintain their important place on Melbourne’s packed events calendar until 2020.”

Successful applicants in the latest round of funding include Open House Melbourne, Good Friday Appeal Kids Day Out, Virgin Australia Melbourne Fashion Festival, Melbourne Chinese New Year Festival, Melbourne Food and Wine Festival and the MidSumma Festival.

Banner printing is already sure to be underway for the city’s next major event, the Toyota AFL Grand Final Parade, to be held on September 29.

The parade will begin at the Old Treasury building, continue along Spring Street and end at Yarra Park. Mayor Doyle explained that the last event brought more than $62m in spending to the municipality.

Triennial Sponsorship Programme applicants must demonstrate the event attracts over 40,000 visitors, has widespread appeal and is held annually.
