Gala fundraiser to include world record attempt

A call has gone out to Randwick City residents to put on thong sandals and take part in a kilometer-long walk or sprint in an attempt to break a world record.

The event is to be held in conjunction with the Des Renford Family Gala Day which is a fundraiser for the Victor Chang Heart Institute.

Event organisers said Australia first achieved success in the Biggest Thong Sandal Race in 2012 when the efforts of 362 participants were entered into the Guiness World Record books but three years later 805 people in the USA set the current record.

Randwick Mayor Noel D’Souza said he was confident Australia could take back the crown and urged everyone to don their thong sandals and take part in what he predicted will be a fun day for the entire family.

Such events have often featured on postcards and calendars promoting the area and, according to the Mayor, participants will be able to have an enjoyable day out while also contributing to a worthy cause.

He said that winning back the Biggest Thong Sandal Race record for Australia would make the occasion and even bigger success.

The $10 entry fee for the race, to be held on October 16, includes a participation medal, thong sandals for the sprint or stroll, and the Gala Day entry ticket.

The day will feature everything from a petting zoo and bumper boats, to giant pool inflatables.
