Holiday fun at Old Melbourne Gaol

Winter holidays are the perfect time to explore Melbourne’s heritage buildings, and the Old Melbourne Gaol has a programme of events to occupy both young and old.

Situated near the CBD, in close reach of West Melbourne, the Gaol has had a colourful and gruesome history that can be explored in the form of tours, whether guided or self-guided. The winter school holiday programme runs from July 3 to 16, and several tours take place each day.

The Old Melbourne Gaol is at 377 Russell Street. Admission is $28 for adults, $23 for concessions, and $15 for children under 16. Family tickets are also available.

If the idea of spending an evening in the cell block sounds like fun, the Gaol has also become a popular venue for hire, whether for private parties or business functions. Corporate gifts and promotional products could easily be arranged for such an event by nearby printing companies.

With its imaginative lighting and sound, organisers have a list of hire companies for technical effects, all approved by the National Trust. Characters dressed as wardens and policemen – or even historical prisoners like Ned Kelly – can be added for extra entertainment. For such a party, guests might be arrested by a constable on arrival, have their fingerprints taken, then be escorted to the cell block for their party.

The venue holds between 30 and 120 guests, and catering can be planned to suit all budgets.
