Joondalup kids to get a taste of the area’s history

Schools across Joondalup will soon have a new addition to their resources, with free copies of a local history book being delivered.

Joondalup City Council is giving an edition of its Picture Our Past book to all schools in the area, to help pupils learn more about its past.

Printing services were used to create the book last year, using records from Joondalup Library’s collection of materials charting the history of the area.

It includes photographs in both black and white and colour, offering personal stories and tracing the development of Joondalup, along with surrounding towns, from small communities to what they are today.

The book grew from a project to create a digital catalogue of all the historical documents, oral records, and images so that local people could access them.

The council later decided to collect the best of the information into the book, which was published with the help of a Federal Government Grant.

Mayor Troy Pickard said the book would be of great use to schools. He commented:

“The spirit of the community is preserved within the pages of Picture Our Past and I’m sure teachers and students will appreciate learning about the lives of the men, women and children who came from all corners of the globe to make their homes in this region.”

Copies of the book can also be purchased from libraries and service centres.
