Locals to rummage for treasures in suitcases

April 10, 2017 by

Visitors and locals of Belmore Park, only minutes by vehicle from Alexandria, have the opportunity to visit a market with a difference – a suitcase rummage.

Products can only be sold from suitcases; there will not be any stalls or tents on the site. Vendors will bring their cases, packed with goodies, for patrons to rummage through and choose items for purchase.

Articles for sale will vary from art and craft work, to handmade goods such as clothing, shoes or even paper. Secondhand records or vintage items are likely to also be available. All merchandise will be recycled, preowned or handmade, with no commercially available items on offer at all. Vendors will be local craftspeople and artisans or not-for-profit organisations.

Suitcase rummage is the brainchild of Isabel FitzGerald and Daniele Constance who, back n 2010, wanted to promote the work of local emerging artists and entrepreneurs while concentrating on fostering sustainable habits. Promoting a sense of community was also a strong motivator for them.

Signs are often used at an event such as this to direct people from one area to the next, and vendors may be using custom printed stationery for price tags.

The suitcase rummage will be held opposite Central Station at the intersection of Eddy Avenue and Hay Street at Belmore Park on Sunday, April 23 from 11:00 am to 4:00 pm.
