Melbourne awards bring out top achievers

Top achievers from South Melbourne and throughout the metropolitan area are vying for top honours in the 2018 Melbourne Awards.

Described as the ‘city’s highest accolade’ by Melbourne Lord Mayor Sally Capp, the awards celebrate the many inspirational people who dedicate their energy and time to benefit Melbourne. She added:

“From iconic institutions like the Queen Victoria Market to inspirational community groups like Movember, each of our 24 finalists contributes to the fabric of Melbourne in their own unique way.”

The selection of Melburnian of the Year is among the major highlights of the annual awards programme, according to the Lord Mayor who said:

“This award goes to someone who is an inspirational role model, one who has made an outstanding contribution to the city, as well as a significant contribution to the Melbourne community.”

She said the awards, which have been held for 16 years, also recognise significant achievements in strengthening the city’s profile, the community, multiculturalism and sustainability. In so doing, several subcategories recognise community organisations and corporations within their various fields of endeavour.

While the business cards of many finalists promote everything from the Queen Victoria Night Markets to music therapy at the Royal Melbourne Hospital, Lord Mayor Capp said all finalists should be congratulated.

The winners will be announced at a gala dinner to be held on November 17 at the Town Hall.
