Miriam Makeba tribute to form part of jazz festival

One of Prahran’s most popular performance venues, Chapel Off Chapel, will be hosting ‘Miriam Makeba Forever!’ in just a few days.

The performance is part of the Stonnington Jazz Festival, and will feature the vocal talents of Fem Belling, Ruth Rogers Wright and Thando, as well as six musicians.

Grammy Award winning Makeba was known as ‘Mama Africa’ and thanks to her international status she made African music popular worldwide. Her 40-year career included working and performing with Harry Belafonte, Dizzy Gillespie, Nina Simone, Paul Simon, and other jazz, soul and folk greats.

The Chapel Theatre is housed in what was once an old church. It features original stained glass windows, two performance venues and an art gallery in the foyer. The gallery frequently showcases exhibitions from both local and international artists, and there is plenty of scope here for printing services, with posters, programmes, and advertising of local events in the form of flyers and other promotional products.

A long-time favourite of locals, Chapel Off Chapel has also been highly praised by international Australian actor Geoffrey Rush.

There will be only one performance of ‘Miriam Makeba Forever!’, and it takes place at 7:00 pm this Sunday, May 14. Tickets are $40, or $35 for concession. Chapel Off Chapel can be found at 12 Little Chapel Street, Prahran.
