Broadmeadows is set to become an important hub for Victoria’s rugby league programmes following a recent announcement to establish a Rugby League Centre of Excellence.

A joint project between Melbourne Storm, Hume City Council, NRL Victoria, the NRL and State Government, the centre will include an NRL Victoria administrative-base, high-performance facilities and playing fields.

According to State Member for Broadmeadows Frank McGuire, the new facility will not only provide an excellent home base for Melbourne Storm, but also a top venue for national and state level tournaments, camps and training. McGuire said:

“This Centre of Excellence will inspire today’s youth and future generations, and build community cohesion.”

The $12m centre, he said, has also provided an opportunity to introduce a new women’s team for Melbourne Storm.

The move, which is expected to generate demand for a new line of promotional products, has been welcomed by Mayor of Hume Geoff Porter, who said:

“Not only will it support local female talent, it will also create a pathway for a Melbourne Storm women’s team to take part in the new NRL Women’s Premiership.”

Cr. Porter said the new world-class facility will be built on land provided by the local Council, and will offer residents access to a facility of elite qualities, ensuring they have the very best on their doorsteps.
