The first sod marking the start of a $100 million expansion at Midland Gate shopping Centre has been turned.

City of Swan Mayor Mick Wainwright, together with Midland MLA Michelle Roberts and Vicinity Centres Executive General Manager of Development Carolyn Viney, officially launched the project recently.

The expansion of Midland Gate was considered by Roberts as an important step in such a rapidly growing suburb.

She said the project will see the centre expand by about 14,000 square metres to 69,000sqm in gross lettable space, making way for new businesses to operate within the expanded market.

Roberts said:

“It will be another stage in the transformation of Midland into a vibrant urban centre, with secure business and employment opportunities.”

She said it is expected a further 965 jobs will be created, including 650 ongoing service, hospitality and retail roles as well as 315 construction positions, adding that the project represented an important part of Midland’s ongoing transformation into one of the region’s major residential and commercial hubs.

After 40 years servicing the area’s retail needs, the new construction is an exciting milestone, according to Viney.

She said that when complete in 2019, Midland Gate retail signs will feature about 215 retailers, including Target, JB Hi-Fi, Big W, Kmart, Harris Scarfe, Woolworths, Coles and Aldi.

Viney added that the latest redevelopment is aimed at addressing the needs of the area’s growing population, which is expected to reach 300,000 by the year 2025.
