Perth exhibition honours local travel book

An exhibition of art, diaries and other material by Alison Lester will soon be on display in Perth, to celebrate her award-winning children’s book, ‘Are We There Yet: A Journey Around Australia’.

Lester has written more than 25 books for children and two for young adults. She wrote and illustrated this one after a road trip with her family. The book was awarded the Children’s Book of the Year Award in the Picture Book category in 2005.

Visitors to Perth’s State Library of Western Australia will be able to see Lester’s original illustrations and diaries, as well as other relevant materials.

Lester’s work has previously been exhibited in Japan and Taipei, and she frequently travels to remote schools to encourage children to write and draw based on their own experiences.

As stated on Lester’s website:

“Her picture books mix imaginary worlds with everyday life, encouraging children to believe in themselves and celebrate the differences that make them special.”

Children viewing the exhibition might be encouraged to undertake similar illustrations and diaries about their own travels. Parents could use local printing services for document scanning, digital printing, and laminating of their children’s writing and artworks to preserve memories of favourite journeys.

This exhibition is free and will be in the Story Place Gallery from tomorrow, August 18, to Tuesday, October 31. The gallery will be open during normal library hours, from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm.
