Potential transport upgrade may affect Heathmont

Proposed changes to Melbourne’s transport infrastructure may impact on the economy of its suburbs.

Councillor Mike Clark has a role in the Eastern Transport Coalition (ETC). He believes changes should be made to enable places like Heathmont to thrive. Printing services are useful for organisations that want to communicate with the public.

Councillor Clark told the Lilydale & Yarra Valley Leader:

“My proposal is to stop metro trains from Upper Ferntree Gully and run a three-carriage, driverless shuttle train to Belgrave. It would free up the metro network, which is subject to trees on the line and slip problems whenever it rains.”

Councillor Clark thinks that many of the issues causing regional transport difficulties are associated with single tracks. As a result, he suggests that there could be moves to widen access. In particular, he recommends this step with regards to the line culminating at Lilydale station. He hopes that a level crossing in the vicinity can be eliminated.

The level crossing has had its purposes questioned for several years. However, the Level Crossing Removal Authority (LCRA) has a website indicating that progress is unlikely to be swift, as it seems that there is no design available for the removal of the crossing, nor has a specific date for the start of the construction process been made public so far.
