Rockingham sculpture awards shelved until 2019

The Castaways Sculpture Awards, which have been an annual feature on the Rockingham Foreshore since 2008, have been cancelled for 2018 due to revitalisation works on the foreshore. The awards will be relaunched in 2019.

City of Rockingham Council decided to ditch the awards for this year as it was felt that Stage 1 of the Beach Foreshore Revitalisation works, due to begin in June, would restrict the showcasing of the exhibits. The beach and boardwalk immediately in front of the cafés will be affected by the work between June and December.

The Castaways Sculpture Awards raise community awareness about environmental sustainability and recycling, as the artworks are created from recycled materials. In previous years, there have been awards for primary and secondary schools as well as open categories, a People’s Choice Award and Collective Art Award (for sculpture created by educational and community groups). The sculptures attract over 15,00 visitors each year. Individual works are often thought-provoking, and may be fun and even interactive. A photography competition and a poetry prize were also included in the 2017 awards.

City of Rockingham Council intends to relaunch the awards in October 2019, promising they will be bigger and better. There will no doubt be poster printing and flyer printing required to publicise the relaunched awards and to encourage all parts of the community to become involved.
