Sutherland Shire shows sole to charity organisation

Billies Bushies, a running club based in Sutherland Shire, has given a donation used footwear to charity.

Billies Bushies has collected the shoes on behalf of Shoes For Planet Earth (SFPE). SFPE has the capacity to recycle running shoes which have been worn several times. The recycled shoes can be used by people in need in a variety of countries. Newsletter printing from Caringbah could be employed to highlight the efforts and achievements of Billies Bushies.

Dennis O’Brien, a spokesperson for Billies Bushies, told the St George and Sutherland Shire Leader:

“It all started a few years ago when one of our runners, Kevin Tiller, heard about Shoes for Planet Earth and organised Bushie shoe collections for a few years before passing the baton on to Billy Hick.”

O’Brien pointed out that the bulk of the shoes that have been gathered have gone to African communities. He indicated that the group usually makes twice yearly collections of running shoes. He suggested that some runners tend to wear out their shoes quickly, meaning that there is always quite a lot of footwear for the club to dispose of when the time comes.

This time around, disadvantaged communities within Australia benefited from the collection. The shoes were treated to make them suitable for secondhand usage. It is hoped that football boots might prove to be particularly popular going forward.
