The culture of India will be highlighted on banner printing in Footscray throughout October, with the staging of the Footscray Diwali Festival.

The festival, which hails from India, has become one of the country’s most important in terms of cultural festivals celebrated by the Indian community.

Its aim is to celebrate bringing the community together, and it includes its own ceremonies, traditions, and rituals.

India’s Diwali – Festival of Lights will be staged in Footscray for the first time this year which has been welcomed with great excitement by Festival organiser and Indian Cultural Association of Victoria president Raj Saini.

“We hope to bring audiences all the culture, nostalgia and celebration that are synonymous with Diwali in India.

“We hope people from all across Melbourne come along and join us under the open sky for this beautiful and fun Indian tradition.”

He said the event will see Footscray Park come to life with cultural performances, Bollywood dancing, kids’ entertainment, jewellery stores, Indian clothing and food stalls offering a wide selection of Asian cuisine.

The free family-friendly festival, to be held on October 22 from 3:00 pm to 9:00 pm, will also host a colourful programme for children including an animal petting zoo, bubble shows, jumping castles, carnival rides, balloon twisting, face painting, and pony rides.

Maribyrnong City Mayor Catherine Cumming urged everyone to visit the Diwali Festival and experience the joyful and vibrant performances and culture first hand.
