West Melbourne soccer team bid seeks regional assistance

A bid to create a new West Melbourne side for the A-League tournament is looking to Kardinia Park in the regional city of Geelong to act as host for many of its games.

The West Melbourne Group, which is behind the bid to add the new team, has said it is in an advanced stage of discussions with Kardinia Park to put on fixtures in the first few years of the proposed side’s existence. The team has also held negotiations with rectangular stadium AAMI Park in inner Melbourne, as Kardinia Park is an oval facility designed for Australian rules football and cricket.

Additionally, the Geelong ground hosts many AFL games throughout the year, leading to potential clashes with the A-League fixture. However, a spokesperson for West Melbourne Group told DailyFootballShow.com that it would like to see the new team play as many games as possible in Geelong, as it is often considered part of Melbourne’s western region. He explained:

“We want to play at Kardinia Park because we want our club to be totally focused on supporting sport and community out West.”

The spokesperson added that the group would build its own 15,000seat stadium if its application to the league were successful.
