Alexandria residents will have access to a new aquatic centre which is being heralded as Sydney’s largest and most modern in 20 years.

The first sod was turned to officially mark the start of work on the Gunyama Park Aquatic and Recreation Centre at Green Square recently by Lord Mayor of Sydney Clover Moore as well as the project’s designers, architects and construction firm representatives.

“This new pool will help complete the transformation of Green Square from an industrial centre into a lively new neighbourhood – an area that will soon be home to more than 61,000 residents,” said the Lord Mayor.

He said that an amount of $540 million has been put into the budget to deliver facilities such as the aquatic centre, and beautifully-designed and high quality services to meet community needs over the next 10 years.

Green Square will also host 40 parks to ensure open space in what will be a high density living environment is at a premium, he said.

The Mayor sees the Gunyama Park complex as yet another great place for visitors and locals to relax, exercise and enjoy time with family and friends.

A graphic design of the new complex features a 25-metre pool to cater for swimming lessons, an indoor hydrotherapy pool and leisure water area that is heated, indoor play areas and a crèche, fitness and health centre, new public artwork, lighting and landscaping plus a sports field with storage, change rooms and public toilets.
