Work underway to upgrade popular seaside park

A popular park that boasts significant heritage and environmental value for residents in the Narrabeen, Mona Vale and Northern Beaches area is to be upgraded.

Work has just begun at Birdwood Park North Narrabeen, where council is investing $365,000 into major improvements.

Ben Taylor, North Beaches Deputy General Manager, said the area of the park to be worked on provides a beautiful outlook over North Narrabeen Beach.

He said the recreational spot, which often featured on postcards, has been extremely popular with visitors and locals, but following 30 years of sustained and heavy use, it is now rundown and in urgent need of upgrading.

Taylor said Birdwood Park’s great location has seen visitor numbers rise in recent years, but it was time to ensure the amenity’s quality matched modern day standards.

The project, he said, will do a great deal to improve the park’s recreational use, safety and accessibility, as well as attract many more visitors and residents from the broader community to enjoy the open space.

The schedule of work will include the introduction of a 26-space concrete carpark, concreted platforms for seating, water bubbler, beach shower, park furniture including seats and picnic tables, new grassed areas and custom shade structures.

Substantial environmental benefits will also be provided by controlling erosion, as well as ensuring carpark run-off is filtered before it enters the lagoon.

The work is due for competition in June.
