Yacht club set to sail into new era with top facility

Plans to rebuild the circa 1963 Parkdale Yacht Club have received the green light.

The move comes after several community groups showed interest in sharing the facility, estimated to be built at a cost of $2.35m.

Having served beach enthusiasts from Braeside and throughout the City of Kingston for more than a half century, the club, according to Mayor Steve Staikos, has reached a stage where it needs replacing. Cr. Staikos said:

“We have been investing significantly in sporting facilities, kindergartens and life-saving clubs right across the municipality, and the Parkdale Yacht Club is next in line for much-needed improvements.”

By rebuilding the facility, he said, it would be able to service the needs of community groups and the yacht club for many years in the future.

Staikos added that opening up the new building to various community groups for use during the week will make the most of a `fantastic’ facility.

The community groups had responded, he said, to an invitation by Council to illustrate their desire to share use of the facility by formally applying.

As a result, Beach Patrol Australia and Mentone Girl Guides will join the Parkdale Yacht Club. The next step is to prepare plans, including graphic design for the new building.

Community feedback will then be called on the plans before tenders from constructors for the project are invited.
